Local Actress and Former MCCC Acting Teacher Staring in ‘A Woman of No Importance’ at Walnut Street Theatre

Jessica Bedford, an actress and former acting teacher at MCCC, is currently starring in ‘A Woman of No Importance’ at Walnut Street Theatre.

Jessica Bedford, a Philadelphia-based actress and former acting teacher at Montgomery County Community College, is currently starring in Oscar Wilde’s classic satire ‘A Woman of No Importance’ at Walnut Street Theatre, according to a staff report from the Chestnut Hill Local.

The play directed by Walnut Producing Artistic Director Bernard Havard will finish its long run on March 1.

Bedford said that the play begins as a light comedy that then becomes a critique on society, something that was unusual and forward-thinking when Wilde wrote it.

“He was really asking the society in which he lived whether their treatment of women was fair, and making the case for them to think that question through,” said Bedford.

The main character is a single lady of means but little smarts who is determined to find a husband.

“It’s a freeing challenge to play someone different from yourself and to walk along in someone else’s shoes,” said Bedford.

The actress also enjoys teaching her craft, and in addition to MCCC, she has also done so at Walnut and Villanova University and other institutions.
