Newtown Square resident Nicola Carlino – the co-owner of Carlino’s, the Italian gourmet markets in Ardmore and West Chester – has died at 88, writes Bonnie Cook for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

From an early age, Carlino, a native of Italy, had an affinity for cooking, gardening, and winemaking. He married Angela Di Medio when he was 24, and they immigrated to the U.S. in 1968.

After the school in Haverford he was working at closed in the early 1980s, the couple decided to open a pasta shop, Carlino’s Homemade Pasta in Ardmore, with help from their two sons. Over the years, the store grew and changed its name to Carlino’s Market.

The new business encompassed a pizza and bread bakery, pastry shop, fresh produce, prepared dishes, and gourmet food gift baskets, among other things.

The family then opened a second Carlino’s, 13 years ago in West Chester.

As the business became successful and kept growing, the main mission of preparing gourmet food for a discerning public remained the same.

“He just loved feeding people,” said his daughter-in-law, Laura Carlino.
