Ten Thousand Villages, the global maker-to-market store that recently opened a Bryn Mawr location, continues to expand as other retailers are forced to close their doors for good, writes Mayannah Beauvoir for the Philadelphia Magazine.

The retailer is known for its fair trade practices and sustainability efforts, as well as its commitment to fostering cultural exchange.

The company operates by purchasing and then reselling traditional crafts of its partner artisans and makers from 30 countries, most of whom are women. Each product that is bought helps artisans earn a fair living wage.

This has helped Ten Thousand Villages continue to expand both its online and brick-and-mortar presence amid retail apocalypse, including in the Philadelphia area.

One of the reasons for its brick-and-mortar success is careful planning on possible new locations.

“We are committed to maintaining a space in the North American marketplace on behalf of artisans who would otherwise be excluded from the global economy,“ said Gordon Zook, CEO of Ten Thousand Villages. “We focused on finding locations where we can join thriving retail communities like those in Bryn Mawr and Glen Mills.“
