Baby koalas, wombats, and other animals native to Australia that were burned or orphaned in devastating wildfires received an assist from The Handwork Studio in Narberth, writes Mari A. Schaefer for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The studio teaches various crafts to children, including knitting and sewing. Earlier this month, it hosted two workshops where volunteers of all ages made items for the orphaned and injured animals.

Among other things, the participants made sling-like carriers for baby kangaroos to be worn by human volunteers and swaddling wraps for little wombats.

“We have closets full of fabric and yarn we were happy to use,” said Julia Yosen, the Handwork Studio’s executive director.

All the items were crafted using instructions posted by the Animal Rescue Collective Craft Guild of Australia. They solicited the help of crafters around the globe to help the animals in need.

Then, Narberth volunteers worked with the Maine branch of the Guild to make sure the items get to their intended destination.

“It was compelling that people could help by doing the same things we do every day,” said Ana Castro, the studio manager.
