Freshman U.S. Rep. Madeleine Dean is poised to close more constituent service cases than any other House Democrat in the country in her first term, writes Maria Panaritis for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Montgomery County congresswoman and her staff have managed to close 1,400 constituent service cases, after not even a full year in office.

According to Dean, tending to the micro-needs of constituents has been her priority since she took over Josh Shapiro’s former state House seat seven years ago. And she is not doing it alone.

“I have a team of people who believe in this,” said the Glenside native.

This priority has been set by Dean’s deep commitment to service as part of her Catholic faith in St. Vincent de Paul’s social justice tradition.

Her efforts are helmed by a longtime staffer, Kathleen Joyce. She helped build congresswoman’s formidable constituent-service operation and is currently running it as Dean’s congressional district office director.

Her reasoning for focusing on individual cases is simple.

“If you’re going to knock on doors and ask people for their vote,” said Joyce, “you should also knock on their doors to assist them.”
