Germantown Academy in Fort Washington recently introduced its new library and learning commons specifically designed for its youngest learners, writes Kristen A. Graham for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Pre K-12 prep school has invested $1.5 million into the space to create an academic hub where students can read, learn, and grow.

“It is a space where children can become more curious, it’s a place where they can nurture a love for reading, it encourages collaboration and inspires a spirit of innovation,” said Sue Szczepkowski, head of the lower school.

The kids also helped design the library. In fact last year, they produced 100 prototypes as part of a design challenge to think up of everything they would like to see in the new library.

Their ideas ranged from whimsical ones like a light-up floor to practical solutions, such as soft places to sit.

These prototypes then went into producing the final product.

Now the new space prominently features both books and technology, including a media studio with a green screen and a mobile smartboard for lessons.

And most importantly, the kids love the new addition.

“It feels like you’re in heaven — it’s just crazy,” said 9-year-old Abe Genkin.
