Jack may be nimble and may be quick, but he can’t hold a candle to Brandon Bechtel, the 17-year-old owner of The Candle Studio in Skippack.

That’s not a misprint. Bechtel, of Harleysville, is just 17, and his business, which opened in June, is already booming.

The studio, which is located at 4038 West Skippack Pike in Skippack Village, offers an opportunity for guests to create their own candles featuring nearly 100 scents and options.

The choices range from Apple Blossom to White Wine and plenty of other options in between.

“I’ve been making candles for five years,” Bechtel said. “I was selling them on Amazon. Then I decided to do this, where people can make their own candles in any scent they want.”

Between his online business, which is reported to have more than $500,000 last year, and The Candle Studio, this young man has a future that is truly burning bright.

Bechtel was home-schooled and is heading to Temple University this fall, where he will major in business while also keeping his own business up and running.

When most kids are making money cutting grass or do odd jobs, Bechtel wanted to try something different. Needless to say, he found it, and is now burning the candle at both ends, so to speak.

“People are a little surprised by my age,” he said. “But I’m always full of surprises. I just stumbled on this and ran with it.”

The concept is simple and basic. Groups can book candle-making parties, have a good time and create their own works of scented-wax art. The parties range from family gathering to birthday parties or sometimes just a BYOB girls day out.

“We like to shop locally (for supplies),” he said. “Our candles are 100 percent soy, so they burn friendly. Our wicks are all natural, too. People seem to really enjoy it.

“No two candles can be the exact same. That’s the neat part. But everyone has a good time doing this.”

Prices vary depending on jar size, beginning at $13. The price includes every ingredient to craft your own candle in our studio – including the jar, wax, wick, fragrance and help from team members. There is no charge for any sitting fees. Customers only pay for what they create.
