Well water makes for Well Crafted Beer

Well Crafted Beer Company originated when a few college friends teamed up to home brew out of a garage. Their passion for beer had evolved from drinking and talking about beer to brewing it, according to a press release.

As individuals, Rick, Doug, and Joe were only making about 5 gallons, but when they pulled their equipment and time together, they realized they could produce three times that amount.

Blending a variety of hops, malts, and yeasts to create different beer styles became a weekend ritual. Each batch, the guys tweaked the recipes and experimented with new ingredients and brewing processes. Rick realized the well water they were using was having an impact and started adjusting the water chemistry. Each brew was better than the last, and eager to turn a hobby into a business, four families started making plans to open a brewpub.

The first year was rife with challenges to overcome, such as scaling from a small homebrew batch to a 7 barrel system, staffing and finding a good home for the brewpub. Finding an ideal location was easily the most difficult challenge the team faced. Initially Well Crafted wanted a small 20 seat location, but after an exhausting search, landed on a much bigger 150-seat location.

“We went through three different business models and locations before we found something we could work with,” said sales and marketing director Nica Bellenger. “We had to crane in equipment and the renovation took almost a whole year to complete.” The location they settled on has been unoccupied for 10 years, and is rumored to have been a masonic temple.

Nearly a year later, Well Crafted Beer Company has made 87 brews and counting! They follow the same principles as homebrewing and treat the water before beer is made in their 7 barrel system. Chlorine and carbon are filtered from public water and for some styles, minerals are added back in. They strive to have something for everyone on draft including IPAs, Pale Ales, Sours, Dark Beers, Wheats, seasonals, and barrel-aged brews.

Well Crafted’s most popular beer so far is the Blonde Americano, described as an eye-opening Blonde Ale. It is a unique beer made with blonde coffee from Backyard Beans, fresh vanilla and smooth milk sugar. With 87 beers to choose from, there really is something for everyone.

Located in Lansdale, PA right next to the SEPTA train station, Well Crafted has 20 rotating taps of craft beer made on the premises and fresh cocktails made with local spirits. The scratch kitchen offers a seasonal food menu of snacks, melty sandwiches, kids food, and vegetarian options. It’s an entertainment destination with seating for over 100 and weekly events like open mic, trivia, and live music. Monthly, they host activities like yoga, boot camp, and art shows.

“We’re trying to become a destination spot, so you’re not just there for the beer, but for the whole experience,” explained Bellenger.

The brewpub is open Tuesdays through Thursdays from 4 to 11 pm, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 am to 12 am, and Sundays from 11 am to 8 pm. For more information go to wellcraftedbeer.com. Follow them on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @wellcraftedbeer.
