Abington to receive state funds for affordable housing projects

The director of the state agency that oversees community and economic development said the need for affordable housing exist regardless of zipcode.

State officials recently announced $3.4 million dollars in new grants to preserve affordable housing units outside of the state’s largest cities, and Abington Township in Montgomery County is one of the suburban areas in need of such housing, according to a story by Ryan Briggs for whyy.org.

Abington appears to be one of the more affluent townships in Montgomery County, a county with no shortage of affluence, and therein lies the problem; limited access to affordable housing. The township will receive a $500,000 DCED grant to rehab eight houses.

The grants are being funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s HOME program.
