Greater Philadelphia YMCA offers relief for impacted federal employees

By

In what appears to be Pennsylvania’s largest layoff yet from the coronavirus pandemic, the Greater Philadelphia YMCA, with 17 locations, stretching from Southern New Jersey to the Upper Perkiomen Valley, has laid off 4,000 employees.

The Greater Philadelphia YMCA announced it will defer membership dues for February 2019 at all of its 17 locations for members & their families who are currently affected by the partial federal shutdown.  They are also inviting non-member government employees and their families affected by the shutdown to come to the Y for the month of February free of charge.

Home to more than 45,000 federal employees, the Philadelphia metropolitan region has one of the highest concentrations of government employees outside of the Washington, DC region. 5,000 federal employees have been furloughed or are working without pay in New Jersey alone. Those employees missed their first paycheck this past Friday as the shutdown drags well into its 3rd week.

To qualify for this program, federal employees need only present a federal employee ID. The deferral will cover the entire month of February, regardless of when the shutdown may be resolved (i.e., if the shutdown ends on February 4th, you are covered through the end of the month).

“We are committed to connecting people to healthier lives. We know the combination of exercise and the sense of community they will find at the Y, can alleviate some of the stress these federal employees are feeling. We hope that this will undo some of the financial pressure on our current members. But we also invite any federal workers, affected by this shutdown, to take this opportunity to experience the support we offer our communities every day,” says Shaun Elliott, President & CEO of the Greater Philadelphia YMCA.

The Greater Philadelphia YMCA has 17 locations, stretching from Southern New Jersey to the Upper Perkiomen Valley. It serves approximately 200,000 individuals, providing top-of-the-line fitness options, group exercise, world-famous pools, indoor running tracks, and up to 2 hours of free childcare per day while members use the facility.
