Four of the oldest taverns in America are right here in Montco.

The Broad Axe Tavern in Ambler comes in at number 2, and not far behind you’ll find Brittingham’s (17) and The General (12), both in Lafayette Hill.

And coming in at number 18, the venerable Blue Bell Inn, which recently underwent a makeover that includes an outdoor firepit and a freshening up throughout, which, when you’re closing in on 300 years old, is needed from time to time.

The Broad Axe Tavern dates back to 1681, long before there were the roads Skippack Pike or Butler Pike in front of it, according to their website. The tavern was located on an old Indian path where farmers took their grain to one of several mills in the area. Traditionally, many farmers maintained stills for friends, neighbors and passerby. As traffic increased, this hospitality stretched the income of farm families, so some built a small tavern and began to charge for food and a place to stay. The tavern soon became a place for locals to gather and exchange news.

Some people love history. Some folks enjoy drinking and sampling some of the world’s best beers while doing so, writes Jason Rossi for cheatsheet.com.

As it turns out, there are a lot of locations that cater to both interests. If you want to enjoy history while enjoying a drink, you have to head to the oldest bars in America. The location at No. 4 predates the Revolutionary War by decades, and it’s not even close to being the oldest establishment in the United States, according to Brookston Beer Bulletin.
