A new website, created by Stitch product designer Lauren Hallden, is taking aim at online advertisers who  exploit anxiety about body image to sell their products.

Visitors to “Problem Bodies” will see a question about a nonexistent problem, followed by an ad for the bogus product needed to correct it, writes Roberto Torres at technical.ly.

“Is your one toenail too wrinkled?” the site asks.

Click “yeah, probably,” and you’ll find the solution: “Ultimate resurfacing toenail firmers.”

In a playful way, the site delivers a poignant criticism of digital marketing, and society overall.  Hallden says it is her response to the constant scrutiny under which our bodies (but mostly, the female body) are subjected to by targeted online advertising.

The Port Richmond developer hopes the similarity between the site’s wacky, algorithm-generated copy and actual ads running on social platforms make online marketers and technologists building those platforms rethink their approach to the human body.
