Tom Lepera, business representative of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 98, arrived at the Montgomery County Fire Academy shortly after sunrise on a recent Saturday morning.

“I can tell you that we could not see the sun because of the heavy rain. But rain did not stop Tom and his fellow electricians, Bo Lawless, Kevin Friel and Pat Diehl from working very hard in the driving rain to install the new lighting at the Montgomery County Firefighters Memorial,” said Tom Garrity, director of the Montgomery Fire Academy.  “The IBEW generously donated their time and skills to install the lighting, which was obtained through a generous PECO donation last fall.”

Channel 6 and Channel 29 covered the installation and two members of our Advisory Committee, Roy Nuss and John Kelly, spoke with Channel 29 about the project, said Garrity. Coincidentally, Roy was teaching Haz Mat and John was here with the HazMat Team for a physical when news cameramen arrived unexpectedly.

“Suzanne Ryan of PECO suggested the lighting upgrade when PECO donated to the Memorial Fund; and, it was Chief Tom O’Donnell who obtained the assistance of the IBEW for this project,” Garrity continued. “The IBEW will return next week to install a heavy duty control unit and adjust the lights. As the advisory Committee suggested, we now have lights on the flag so we can fly our flag 24/7 at the Memorial.”
