The Eco-Friendly Benefits of a Commercial Mat

On April 22, many of us celebrated Earth Day by organizing community clean ups. Here at Health Mats we did a little spring cleaning in our industrial laundry facility and reflected on how important it is to keep our Health Mats building clean, safe, and healthy! There is no better time than right now to discuss how your facility can become eco-friendly too! For many years, more and more people are aware of the environmental impacts and hazards that our planet is facing daily. Though the effects of these hazards can’t be fixed overnight, it’s important to do your part to reduce your facility’s carbon footprint where you can. An easy step in the right direction is to simply incorporate commercial mats into your facility maintenance plan. Placing different type of mats that include but aren’t limited to entrance mats, anti-fatigue mats, a wet-step and more can keep your facility and our planet a little safer and protected. See below how commercial mats can have positive environmental impacts on your facility building.

They Improve Your Indoor Air Quality

If you’re a facility manager or owner, it’s important to be aware of the indoor air quality within your building. If you aren’t sure what we are referring to, EPA.gov defines indoor air quality as “the air quality within and around buildings and structures, especially as it relates to the health and comfort of building occupants.” What controlling your indoor air quality really means is understanding the common pollutants that can be found indoors and trying to reduce the health risks associated. Poor indoor air quality that continues over a prolonged period can cause allergies, irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, headaches, dizziness, and fatigue.

If you don’t want your customers or employees to experience allergy-like symptoms within your building, you should incorporate a commercial mat rental program. Commercial mats help improve indoor air quality by trapping the dirt, dust, and debris that are being brought in from the outside. Commercial mats act as a sponge to dirt, water, and other air contaminants. Instead of potentially harmful debris floating around your building, they are eliminated and stopped at the source. When you place an entrance mat outside your building, these pollutants can be taken care of before they ever enter your facility building. Since a rental program also includes your mats being laundered, you will never have to worry about dust or dirt building up over time.

They Can Stop the Spread of Bacteria and Germs

Depending on the industry your company may be in, having a clean and sanitary building is an absolute necessity. This can be especially true for restaurants, grocery stores, or other food service businesses that need to ensure their products are safe and sanitary. If you work in one of these industries, you will be aware of the dangers that a buildup of bacteria and germs can cause. Not only can it create an unsafe environment for employees, it can also end up causing food born illnesses as well. A lot of dangerous bacteria can also be spread by standing and stagnant water. If you equip areas known to experience this type of problem with a wet-step mat, you’ll be eliminating the threat at the source. The wet-step was built with holes that allow water to properly drain without causing a slippery surface to stand on. They are also anti-microbial which means they can reduce odors and stop the spreading of germs. As an added benefit, the wet step is also oil and grease resistant so you never have to worry about stubborn stains. Since you’ll be using less bleach and other strong chemicals to clean up mold and mildew, not as many toxins will be released into the air as well. A wet-step not only protects your business but the earth as well.

They Can Earn You LEED Credits

Did you know that earning your facility LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) credits can help set your business apart from the rest? This is because LEED is the most widely used green rating system in the world. Earning LEED certification demonstrates a dedication to creating a healthy and efficient, cost-saving green building. Receiving certification means your building can be recognized globally as a symbol of sustainability. Your facility can earn LEED credits just by utilizing a commercial mat rental program. U.S Green Building Council recognizes commercial mats as entrance systems that can trap moisture and debris and contain them until laundered. This then prevents a high turnover rate of mats which means less mat-related waste will end up in landfills. All around this is seen as a win-win for sustainability.
