Lower Merion School District officials say Stoneleigh ‘must be explored’

Officials of the Lower Merion School District say “condemning 6.9 acres or even all 42 acres of Stoneleigh must be considered as part of plans for a new middle school given the limited options for construction.

In an letter, published by Main Line Media News over Memorial Day weekend, Superintendent Robert Copeland and Dr. Melissa R. Gilbert, president of the Lower Merion school system’s board of directors, said acquiring Stoneleigh, whether just a portion for sports activities or the entire property for a new school, “is not an ideal solution,” but added that “there are times when ideals and reality do not align,” writes Alison Burdo at bizjournals.com.

Citing the district’s 21.5 percent increase in student population over the past decade, Copeland and Gilbert warn that there are no signs of a slowdown given the number of multi-family developments coming online in a township that has long drawn families with school-aged children, in part, because of LMSD’s reputation.
