Life Time Inc., known for its resort-style fitness facilities, has ventured into coworking and opened its first rendition in 12,000 square feet on the top and fifth floor of the former Macy’s at Suburban Square in Ardmore.

About 65,000 square feet of the old department store is occupied by a Life Time Athletic facility, which has everything to keep your body in shape, your hair coiffed and your appetite sated at its cafe. This is one of Life Time’s “diamond-level” facilities because of its location at Suburban Square, within a high-end demographic and smaller, boutique format that has extra staff per member. It opened April 27, writes Natalie Kostelni in the Philadelphia Business Journal.

“Within our company, this is a Ritz-Carlton,” said Miklos Horvath, general manager of the fitness facility.

The King of Prussia, Fort Washington and Mount Laurel facilities are a “step below diamond,” Horvath said. Maybe that’s a Hyatt or a W Hotel?

At the heart of the new Suburban Square location is integrating two pillars of many people’s lives — fitness and work — and underscores how certain aspects of life continue to merge and, in some ways, seamlessly. The challenge to incorporating coworking is getting right. Coworking is “super-crowded, fragmented and with low barriers to entry,” said James O’Reilly, president of Life Time Work. As a result, coworking spaces can become a commodity unless it differentiates itself and provides services and a community unattainable elsewhere.
