From CHESCO: Westtown School in National Spotlight with Release of New Basketball Documentary

By

Most of us living here in Chester County are familiar with the Westtown School because of its stellar academic reputation, as well as its 600-acre, slice-of-heaven campus that includes a lake, arboretum, and organic farm tucked away in West Chester.

Now, the rest of America, particularly sports fans, will soon learn of the school for a different reason.

Basketball.

Sports Illustrated has just released a 77-minute documentary – entitled We Town – that chronicles the Westtown School boys basketball team’s 2016-17 season.

The documentary was produced by Mike Tollin, whose impressive resume includes sports films like Radio and Coach Carter.

The Moose, who are not affiliated with the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA), the state’s major governing body of high school sports, featured perhaps one of the greatest starting lineups in the history of high school basketball.

Two players are locks to become NBA lottery picks: Harlem native Mohamed Bamba, who just finished his freshman season at the University of Texas and who is now expected to turn pro, and Norristown native Cameron Reddish, who will attend Duke in the fall for what many believe will be his only year in college.

The 2016-17 team also includes Brandon Randolph, now a freshman at the University of Arizona, Anthony Ochefu, who currently plays at Stony Brook, and Jake Forrester, who will compete at Indiana next year.

We Town spends time on and off the court with the team and coach Seth Berger as they chase a second consecutive Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association (PAISAA) title, while navigating familial tension (Berger’s son plays for the team), academic responsibilities, apathy from the stars, the tricky world of NCAA compliancy, and passion for the sport.

“Like most good sports stories, We Town finds its heart on the sidelines, in main character with a capital C, Coach Seth Berger,” said Josh Oshinsky, SI TV’s vice president of programming. “But the soul of the film is on the hardwood.

“While the film does a nice job bouncing back and forth between a linear telling of the Moose’s season and the off-the-court drama unfolding with the recruitment of Bamba and the Berger family dynamics, it absolutely soars on the court, where these five man-children play the game with a style and flair that you’d expect from an elite college program – or maybe the Phoenix Suns.”
