Egalet Corp. is teaming up with a Montgomery County specialty pharmaceutical company that focuses on oral health in a product co-promotion deal.

Under a two-year agreement, Egalet and OraPharma Inc. will co-promote Egalet’s Sprix pain relief medicine delivered as a nasal spray to dentists, dental specialists and oral surgeons across the country. Sprix nasal spray is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug used for the short-term — up to five days in adults — management of moderate to moderately severe pain that requires analgesia at the opioid level, writes John George in the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Financial terms of the agreement are being kept confidential.

“Given the need for additional non-narcotic analgesics in the dental space, we believe Sprix nasal spray offers an attractive product profile that can complement the OraPharma line of oral health products,” said Mark Strobeck, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Egalet (NASDAQ: EGLT). “This partnership, which expands our commercial reach, represents one aspect of our business development strategy which also includes acquisition of late-stage or approved assets and out-licensing of our Guardian Technology pipeline product candidates.”

Egalet’s Guardian Technology makes tamper-resistant opioid pain medicines. The technology uses an injection molding process to produce hard tablets that are difficult to manipulate — either by cutting, crushing, grinding or breaking, or using a variety of mechanical and electrical tools — by people seeking to misuse or abuse the medicine.

OraPharma, based in Horsham, Pa., is a division of Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc. The company was founded in Warminster, Pa., in 1996. Its flagship product, Arestin, is used along with scaling and root planing procedures to treat patients with adult periodontitis.

As a result of the deal with OraPharma, Egalet has terminated its 2016 agreement with Septodont, a French dental product company with offices in Lancaster, Pa., to market Sprix to dentists.
