Pennsylvania Senator from Montgomery County Moonlights as Medical Marijuana Attorney

By

Pennsylvania Senator Daylin Leach, the Montgomery County Democrat and one of the biggest medical marijuana legislation backers, has added medical marijuana attorney to his resume, writes Steve Esack for The Morning Call.

However, Leach’s role as an attorney for the industry comes with several limitations.

The state Medical Marijuana Act enacted seventeen months ago prohibits elected and appointed public officials from both having a financial stake in the industry and from working for a cannabis company, directly or indirectly, while still serving in state government.

Leach, who was hired by the Sacks Weston Diamond law firm that lobbies on behalf of the industry, was given the green light by the Pennsylvania Ethics Commission to work with the firm.

Leach quit the firm two months ago when he announced his candidacy for a suburban Philadelphia congressional seat.

The Commission’s chief legal counsel, Robin M. Hittie, approved Leach’s work but warned that it could present a conflict of interest if he consciously used his position either politically or for any “private pecuniary benefit” for himself or his family.

Hittie also made it clear that the commission’s ruling covered the Ethics Act only, and no other state laws.
