Horsham’s Bimbo Bakeries, which is part of Grupo Bimbo, has opened a new manufacturing plant and distribution center in Colombia, writes Matt Hamer for Baking Business.

The Tenjo facility took almost a year to complete and cost around $86 million. Now the new facility is producing nearly eight tons of delicious baked goods hourly including hamburger and puff-pastry buns along with other snacks.

It is also conveniently situated close to the company’s original plant to combine logistics and distribution.

The new plant will also help out with Grupo Bimbo’s Good Neighbor community support program that has provided support to the community with programs such as School Supplies Donation Day and the reforestation of the Bogota River basin.

“The Tenjo plant is already making Grupo Bimbo very proud,” said Daniel Servitje, Bimbo’s chairman and CEO.

“Our commitment is to continue working every day to fulfill the purpose stated in our philosophy: to build a sustainable, highly productive and fully humane company.”

In order to stay true to Grupo Bimbo’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the newly constructed plant also has a plant for wastewater treatment, a waste reuse program, along with its state of the art LEED certified energy optimization system.
