Matthew Murphy had to hit the ground running from the moment he took over as the chief executive of Plymouth Meeting’s Griswold Home Care, writes Jane M. Von Bergen for Philly.com.

Within three days of his appointment, Murphy was served with a lawsuit filed by 14 disgruntled California franchisees. At the time, over 10 percent of the company’s franchisees were fighting Griswold in some way.

Murphy had not expected that things would be so difficult when he accepted the job as the CEO of the home health aide staffing franchise.

“I knew it had challenges, but I didn’t know it was going to be this bad,” he said in an interview with Philly.com.

The first thing he did was to stop selling franchises. He then negotiated new franchise agreements with existing owners that changed how they paid royalty fees.

“We wanted both sides to get an early win, to have a bedrock of an agreement.”

His approach was successful. So much so that three years later, Murphy was honored with the American Association of Franchisees and Dealers Franchisor of the Year award for the company’s productive relationship with franchise owners.
