Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery and Delaware Counties has helped build a home for Marine Corps veteran, Dustin Gray, writes Colt Shaw for Philly.com.

Gray, who finished serving two tours in Afghanistan tours three years ago, suffered a traumatic brain injury during a firefight and is also coping with PTSD. His days are now made up of doctor appointments and therapy sessions.

However, he made sure to help with the building process that began in January. In fact he managed to put in well over the 200 hours of “sweat equity” required by Habitat from its soon-to-be homeowners.

“He was a rock star,” said Elizabeth Hefner, a spokeswoman for the chapter, saying that Gray “took charge, led volunteers and taught them how to do stuff.”

And while the praise makes him visibly uncomfortable, the former soldier admits to enjoying being a part of the homebuilding process.

“I just come because I like it,” he said.

Now Gray is ready to move into his new home with his wife Danielle, who works as a bus driver, and their children, Cameron and Shane, before the new school year starts.
