If you are looking to successfully turnaround a company, the best way is to use an engineering approach, writes the CEO of Nutrisystem, Dawn Zier, for Philadelphia Business Journal.

Zier joined the Fort Washington Company with one goal, to turn it around. To achieve this, she applied her engineering experience on four key areas, culture, people, focus, and measurement.

Her first focus was the culture which she feels is the backbone of any business.

“Engineers like to deal in numbers and hard facts, so appreciating that bad culture leads to higher turnover, lower worker engagement, less productivity and unpredictable results is imperative,” said Zier.

Next, she focused getting the right people including enticing back key former employees. This led to restructuring the company’s goals and priorities so that everyone was working from the same page. Finally, she turned to measurements, to find out exactly what was happening in the company.

But while this approach was easy for her as an engineer, Zier feels it is not a prerequisite for a successful turnaround.

“You don’t have to be an engineer to accomplish a successful business turnaround,” said Zier. “All you need to do is think like one.”
