More than 150 golfers – including 50 current and former professional athletes, coaches, and broadcasters – joined Dick Vermeil on Tuesday at the Ron Jaworski-owned Downingtown Country Club to celebrate the milestone 25th edition of the Dick Vermeil Celebrity Golf Invitational.

The Chester County Council of the Boy Scouts of America, which has received more than $4 million from the Invitational throughout the years, used the occasion to surprise Vermeil, an East Fallowfield resident, with the highest of honors.

The Boy Scouts presented the former Philadelphia Eagles and St. Louis Rams coach with the North Star Award, an honor reserved for volunteers who have made significant contributions to Scouting.

Furthermore, the Chester County Council – which plans to build a new Program, Activity, and Resource Campus (PARC) – revealed that it will be naming the second floor of this facility The Dick and Carol Vermeil Leadership Development Center.

The second floor of the structure will be dedicated as a Center for programs that support the development of leadership in young people, and naming it in honor of the Vermeils allows the Boy Scouts to acknowledge and thank both Dick and Carol for their commitment to the Boy Scouts’ mission.

The Dick and Carol Vermeil Leadership Development Center has been designed with conference and program delivery rooms where the Scouting membership can assemble to work on learning and earning Scouting merit badges.

Throughout their lives, the Vermeils have given a tremendous amount of their time and talent in support of numerous charitable organizations throughout the nation. In 1992, Dick agreed to host a celebrity golf tournament benefiting the Chester County Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Each year, dozens of Vermeil’s former players and assistant coaches attend the tournament, thus demonstrating the love, respect, and bond that remains between them and their former coach.

The Dick Vermeil Celebrity Golf Invitational has since become the premier charity tournament within the Philadelphia region. The funds raised by the Invitational also support the Council’s successful outreach program, which provides scholarships for camp and Scouting programs for at-risk youth in Chester County.
