A number of small blue and white signs saying Whitemarsh Township is a great place to “work, live, and worship” have popped up in front of homes across the township, writes Laura McCrystal for Philly.com.

The signs have been provided by Montgomery County Commissioner, Joseph C. Gale. He said he was inspired by Trump to embrace religious beliefs and denounce political correctness. However, the move has ignited passionate debate on whether the word ‘worship’ is appropriate on official signs

“It’s a larger movement,” said Gale. “People are tired of all the political correctness. And this movement in Whitemarsh makes a statement.”

Township supervisor Jim Totten, who is also calling for the change, remembers “worship” being part of the townships’ signs decades ago. However, despite efforts to verify this, there is no written evidence to back his claim up.

The move has also sparked intense debate at the supervisors’ meetings. But Totten, who is not seeking reelection after his term expires, never actually formally proposed the change.

“It’s perplexing about why he’s doing this, particularly if he won’t make the motion,” said Supervisory Board chairperson, Amy Grossman. But, she noted that many other residents are also opposed to adding ‘worship’ to the township’s signs.
