Construction on Skippack Township Correctional Institution Over a Year Behind Schedule

By

Construction on the State Correctional Institution Phoenix in Skippack Township continues to be plagued with delays, and will now open over a year behind schedule, according to a staff report from Correctional News.

The 1.06 million-square-foot facility is being constructed to replace the nearby 1920s Graterford complex. When complete, it will serve as the primary detention center for inmates from Philadelphia area. The 3,872 bed project features a capital case unit, a separate female inmate transitional unit and state of the art security features.

The $400 million project’s original date of completion was June 25, 2015. However, according to Troy Thompson, press secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of General Services, the project is now not expected to be completed until later this year.

Thompson said one of the main reasons for the substandard performance of the contractor, Walsh-Heery Joint Venture, is scheduling issues.

“The original extended scheduled completion date of November 2015 was not met, and despite repeated attempts to get back on track with the contractor, the project is already a year behind schedule,” said Thompson.
