This Year Takes County’s Two Richest Men in Different Directions
After tying for the title of richest man in Montgomery County last year, 2016 took local billionaires John Middleton and Michael Rubin in opposite directions.
Middleton, of Bryn Mawr, leaped 10 spots on the latest Forbes 400 list, from No. 256 to No. 246, while Rubin, also of Bryn Mawr, fell from 256th-richest to No. 309. Middleton is now worth $2.7 billion, while Rubin counts a net worth of $2.3 billion.
The third-richest Forbes 400 billionaire who lives in Montgomery County, Jeffrey Lurie of Wynnewood, ranks 374th with $1.8 billion.
All three Montgomery County billionaires also own a piece of the Philly sports world, with Middleton the largest individual shareholder of the Phillies, Rubin a shareholder of the 76ers, and Lurie the chief owner of the Eagles.
Middleton’s fortune comes from his family’s tobacco company, while Rubin rose to fame in online retail. Lurie, meanwhile, ran a film production company until he acquired the Eagles in 1994, growing the team’s value from $185 million to $1.56 billion.
