As a main gateway to the suburbs from Philadelphia, Old York Road in Abington Township is always busy with traffic and bustling with businesses, described Max Bennett for the Abington Patch.

But according to resident Adele Kubel, the road has a trash problem that she refers to as “blight.”

Kubel has been trying for several years to address the issue of the garbage along the 3.2-mile stretch.

She noticed an increase in the trash at the peak of the coronavirus pandemic and decided to take on the task of dealing with it. She claims that properties along the road are “derelict” and rarely cleaned.

Kubel managed to get 700 or so residents to sign a petition regarding the trash issue. She also presented her concerns to the township, but its response was one she found inadequate.

“They’re disinvesting in Abington,” she said.

And while it is property owners’ responsibility to pick up refuse or be fined, Kubel said they are not held to local regulations.

Abington Township Director of Code and Community Kim Hamm, however, said the allegation is untrue.

“We issue anywhere between 60 and 100 notices monthly,” she said.
