Competing Fashion Outlets Make Montco Entrance

By

Big-name retailers are racing down the fashion runway to discount their latest trends, and Montgomery County shoppers are lining up at the finish line.

Within a day of each other last week, the Metroplex and the Montgomery Mall each christened a brand new fashion outlet: Off 5th by Saks Fifth Avenue and Macy’s Backstage — The Outlet Store, respectively.

Fashion outlet Off 5th will occupy 24,680 square feet in Plymouth Meeting while the state’s first Macy’s Backstage takes up 33,000 within its parent store in North Wales, according to a Philadelphia Business Journal report by Natalie Kostelni.

It’s a strategic move by traditional fashion leaders to capture more market share.

“From Neiman Marcus to Bloomingdales to Saks and Nordstrom, department stores are pinning their growth in revenues on discount retail,” the article stated. “Competition in this realm includes Target, Kohls and TJ Maxx. These discount department stores have also proven to be more profitable.”
