For two decades, World Cafe Live served as a valued cultural and artistic hub, but in recent months, that hasn’t been as much of the case, writes Julia Binswanger for Billy Penn at WHYY.
In May 2025, tech entrepreneur Joseph Callahan was named the new CEO after founder Hal Real retired from the role after 21 years.
While Callahan touted the venue for ushering in a new digital transformation under his stewardship, the first few months of his tenure involved operational challenges, financial struggles, and labor disputes.
After several workers walked off the job in protest of hostile management, many were fired. Shortly thereafter in July, the University of Pennsylvania sent World Cafe Live an eviction letter.
Months later in September, J. Sean Diaz was named the new CEO.
In March 2026, the venue filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and changed its name to World Stage.
Earlier this month, a World Stage manager and three bartenders were arrested after serving alcohol without an active liquor license. Later in the week, Pennsylvania State Police Liquor Control Enforcement officers shut down the venue.
These last several months have been a far cry from its glory days from the early 2000s to 2020s. It remains to be seen what’s next.
