For many Montgomery County residents, spring cleaning can feel overwhelming, but for Paula DuPont, it’s a chance to create clarity and peace.
DuPont, owner and operator of Peace of Mind Moving Managers, left the corporate world in search of a way to help others. She found her calling while helping her mother downsize. They moved her from a Huntingdon Valley home to Lafayette Redeemer continuing care community. “At first it seemed daunting to downsize 50 years-worth of things. But we broke it down into manageable little segments and had a little fun, reminiscing and laughs while doing it,” she told American Community Journals. I’m glad I was there to help her.”
Abington’s DuPont started Peace of Mind in 2020. Today, she works closely with seniors navigating major life transitions, often downsizing from longtime homes into more manageable spaces.
Her advice for anyone starting the process? Don’t wait. “Once you’ve decided you don’t need something, get rid of it that day,” she said. She noted that delaying decisions only creates more clutter. Starting small, like with a linen closet, can build momentum. Being mindful about new purchases helps prevent clutter from returning.
DuPont’s work goes far beyond organizing. Peace of Mind has assisted clients across southeastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. They have facilitated estate sales generating tens of thousands of dollars. Often times, she uncovers some surprising finds. “One client had ancient skulls on a livingroom shelf,” she said. “She earned her archaeology degree from the University of Pennsylvania and wanted to donate the remains to her alma mater. I was relieved that they accepted them.”
In an increasingly digital world, DuPont emphasizes the value of hands-on, service. “Face-to-face guidance is rare these days,” she said. “And for seniors, that is really important.”
With spring cleaning underway, DuPont’s work is a reminder that a little guidance can turn a daunting task into a fresh start.
