Historic Ambler Building Set for Fresh Start With Two New Concepts

Upper Dublin’s Barry Caplan buys Gypsy Blu in Ambler, investing $3M to launch Porter and Gaslight this spring.

A hospitality veteran from Upper Dublin is taking over the location of Ambler’s former Gypsy Blu, according to Emma Dooling for The Philadelphia Business Journal.

Barry Caplan has purchased the Ambler restaurant with plans to transform the historic property into two new dining concepts this spring.

As owner of Access Hotels & Resorts and Access Management, Caplan spent decades traveling to oversee properties across New England and the Southeast.

Now, the 40-year industry veteran is investing in Montco. He acquired the Butler Avenue building and its liquor license, along with the neighboring property at 38 E. Butler Ave., for more than $3 million. El Limon, which occupies the neighboring space, will remain open.

The reimagined space will debut as Porter, an elevated American restaurant on the ground floor. It will serve dishes like roasted duck breast and shrimp cocktail.

The second floor will become the cocktail bar, Gaslight. It will feature craft drinks, small bites, and a private chef’s table. Caplan has partnered with CFO Benjamin Hur and executive chef Brian Thress, formerly of La Provence in Ambler.

The 1893 building, once the Wyndham Hotel, will maintain its office tenants on the upper floors. Caplan hopes to reopen during the first week of April.
