America’s Time Capsule Nears Burial at Philadelphia’s Independence Mall on July 4

America's Time Capsule will be buried at Independence National Historical Park on July 4, 2026 and will remain sealed for 250 years until July 4, 2276.

After years of planning and engineering challenges, America’s Time Capsule is nearly ready to be buried at Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park on July 4, 2026, where it will rest until the nation’s 500th anniversary in 2276, writes Karissa Waddick for USA TODAY.

The America250 Commission has been taking careful measures to avoid a repeat of the West Point incident, where archaeologists opened a 200-year-old time capsule that was buried by cadets in the early 1800s but turned out to contain nothing but gray clumps of dust along with a few old coins.

“250 years is a really long time,” said Jacob Ricker, an engineer with the National Institute of Standards & Technology.

Materials selected to construct a long-lasting vessel have not been in use long enough to determine how they will hold up over time.

“Stainless steels have been around less than 100 years,” Ricker said. “Material choice overall is just very hard.”

When finished, the capsule will be buried at Independence Mall containing contributions from all states, branches of the federal government, and the America250 Commission’s commemoration events.

So far, the selected items are made up of materials from the 2026 Rose Parade, sports memorabilia, an American flag, and student submissions.
