Greg Hamell, a local crossing guard, is bringing smiles to patients and staff at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood through his cheerful and heartfelt greetings each day, writes Christie Ileto for 6abc.
Hamell oversees traffic and guides staff and visitors safely to the hospital entrance. Known for his relentless energy, he has words of encouragement to brighten the day of all who pass by.
“Every morning,” said Krissy Fraelich of cardiovascular imaging. “No matter how cold. No matter how tired. He makes our day start out great.”
His cheerful greetings often include humor and remind everyone of the vital work happening inside the hospital.
“Take your time, it’s not a foot race,” he told one group of workers. “They need you inside.”
For employees wrapping up a challenging shift, Hamell’s cheerful presence is an uplifting sight.
“Sometimes we have stressful nights in there, so to hear someone in there appreciate what we do, without even seeing us doing it, is a good thing,” said John McDonald of Aramark’s environmental services team.
Beloved for his unwavering positivity, Hamell is frequently gifted coffee, tea, or donuts by staff members as a token of their gratitude.
