Amazon has announced its plans to shut down all its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores, write Kate King, Sean McLain, and Joseph De Avila for The Wall Street Journal.
The move is being done as a way for the company to shift its focus on its online same-day delivery service, as well as expanding its Whole Foods Market business.
According to Amazon, its branded stores failed to produce a distinctive customer experience that had an economic model capable of being scaled up successfully.
The closures will result in 57 Amazon Fresh stores and 15 Amazon Go locations, respectively nationwide, being shut down.
Philadelphia’s only Amazon Fresh store just recently opened in Northern Liberties back in August 2025. Meanwhile, there are five other locations in the Philadelphia area.
While all of the Fresh and Go stores will be closed, Amazon said some of the closed brick-and-mortar stores are being converted into Whole Food stores. This would lead to the opening of more than 100 new Whole Foods stores over the next handful of years.
Amazon acquired Whole Foods in a roughly $13.5 million deal back in 2017.
The majority of the Amazon Fresh and Go stores will be closed by Sunday, February 1.
