WSJ: Amazon Fresh in Willow Grove Among Stores Set to Close Nationwide

Amazon is closing its Willow Grove grocery store as it exits Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go locations nationwide.

Amazon is shutting down its physical grocery stores nationwide, a move that will include the Amazon Fresh location in Willow Grove, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The company announced it will close all Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores as it shifts its focus to online same-day delivery and expands its Whole Foods Market footprint. In total, the closures affect 57 Amazon Fresh stores and 15 Amazon Go locations across the country.

According to Amazon, the branded grocery stores failed to create a customer experience that could be scaled profitably, despite heavy investment in technology like cashier-less checkout and smart shopping carts. While some locations may be converted into Whole Foods stores, Amazon has not said whether that will happen in Willow Grove.

Amazon plans to open more than 100 new Whole Foods locations in the coming years and continue testing smaller formats, such as Whole Foods Market Daily Shop. At the same time, the company is doubling down on grocery delivery, which is already available in thousands of communities and is expected to expand further in 2026.

The closure marks another shift in Amazon’s long-running effort to break into brick-and-mortar retail. While its high-tech grocery concepts struggled to gain traction, suburban locations like Willow Grove remain attractive for established brands.
