At Lima Estates, an Acts Retirement community, a winter walking challenge has turned cold months into a season of friendly competition, learning, and connection. Led by Fitness Program Manager Rachel Bunting, the community’s virtual walk invites residents and staff to log miles while “traveling” across the Great American Rail Trail—from Washington, D.C., to Washington State, and back again.
Now in its second year, the 13-week challenge began Nov. 3 and runs through early February. Participants earn miles in flexible ways: 2,000 steps equals a mile; 30 minutes of cardio counts as a mile; and exercise bikes log mileage directly. Water walking and fitness classes also qualify, ensuring everyone can join in—no matter their mobility level. The result is a three-team race (red, green, and yellow) that keeps motivation high through the holidays.
Each week, Bunting sends updates with photos, videos, and fun facts pulled from the trail’s real-world route, spotlighting how abandoned rail lines are transformed into accessible paths by the Rails to Trails Conservancy. Residents track progress on a communal map, celebrate milestones, and enjoy gentle rivalries that spark extra steps when teams fall behind.
More than 70 people are participating this year—nearly two-thirds of them residents—along with physical therapists, culinary leaders, and other staff. Bunting encourages participants with her mantra. “Just do your personal best,” she says. The challenge wraps with a celebration, certificates detailing individual miles, and—yes—cake.
While Lima Estates is located in Delaware County, similar Acts communities in Montgomery County, including Fort Washington and Spring House, run fitness programs rooted in the same philosophy: personalized assessments, creative motivation, and community connection.
If the enthusiasm at Lima is any indication, virtual trails may soon be inspiring seniors across Montco to keep moving—one mile at a time.
