Montgomery County continues to see a decline in primary care physicians as rising operational costs and the difficulties of managing a private practice take their toll, writes J.F. Pirro for the Main Line Today.
However some exceptions still exist, such as Dr. Andrew Lipton, an osteopathic family physician with a decades-long practice who operates Narberth Family Medicine and Acupuncture Center. His business model remains successful despite the challenges of a constantly evolving healthcare landscape.
Still, a growing number of physicians, weary of doing all of the work without getting adequate financial rewards, are either repurposing their practices or retiring early. Others are taking buyouts offered by health networks, further depleting the dwindling ranks of independent doctors struggling to stay afloat.
“It’s overwhelmingly expensive,” said Lipton. “An EKG machine alone costs thousands – or you can join Main Line Health … where you don’t need to also be an entrepreneur.”
In order to navigate these ever-increasing challenges, Lipton partnered with his wife, acupuncturist Mary Ann Settembrino, and together they have been able to maintain a stable and reasonable income.
