Moving to a volleyball club in Conshohocken propelled Delaware native Jocelyn Nathan’s career to levels beyond she had dreamed possible, writes Greg Finberg for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Nathan, now a defensive specialist entering her third season with Penn State women’s volleyball, has played since childhood. She did not receive early recruiting attention because she was not on a top club team, and missed opportunities to attend U.S. training sessions and national competitions like more prominent recruits.
When she was 15, Nathan moved from her smaller Wilmington club to Conshohocken’s East Coast Power.
“When I set my hopes out, I was like, ‘Maybe I’ll get noticed by some lower Division I teams,’” she said. “And it never had anything to do with not believing I could get to that level. It was just, you see what you are working with because not many people knew who I was.”
With the support of her father, Len, and her new team, Nathan began compiling highlight tapes to send to college coaches. She reached out to numerous schools, and Roberta McGuiney, her coach at the Montgomery County club and former Penn State player, helped her land a life-changing offer from the Nittany Lions.
