Skanska USA Building, one of the nation’s largest general contractors, sees a strong future in data centers, writes Joseph N. DiStefano for the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Executive Vice President Todd Lofgren said demand from tech giants like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft is fueling a surge in facilities across central Pennsylvania, where reliable power is more available than in crowded cities.
Skanska’s Conshohocken office cites the nearby Limerick nuclear station could become a crucial energy source for this wave of development.
To support the shift, Skanska has established an Advanced Technology Group focused on data centers nationwide, positioning Pennsylvania as a growth hub. The pivot comes as federal funding cuts have slowed some traditional staples like higher education and hospital projects.
Still, the company continues to shape the region. Its portfolio includes the Philadelphia International Airport, Swarthmore College, and health systems like Penn Medicine and Jefferson Health.
Skanska is also embracing prefabrication. It partnered with Montco’s PDM Constructors and Durapods to produce modular hospital rooms and facades that help offset labor shortages.
