Merion Park’s David Corenswet to Reprise Role of Superman

David Corenswet, who grew up in Merion Park, will reprise his role as Superman in Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to the mega-hit movie, writes Elizabeth Wellington for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Superman writer James Gunn announced this week on social media that the second movie in the series will hit theaters in July of 2027, with Corenswet back as the cape-wearing protagonist. Nicholas Hoult will also return as Lex Luthor.

Gunn had hinted repeatedly in recent weeks that he was working on the next film, but never specified it was a straight sequel. Milly Alcock’s Supergirl will debut in theaters in June 2026.

Corenswet, who moved from Center City to Montgomery County as a child, was Gunn’s favorite choice for the iconic role when he auditioned two years ago. The Juilliard graduate, then a relatively unknown TV actor, caught Gunn’s attention with a handwritten letter explaining what playing Superman would mean to him.

Gun said he found “the biggest movie star in the world” in Corenswet, “and people don’t know it yet… there are very, very few people that have the acting chops, the comedy chops, and happen to be extraordinarily handsome at the same time.”
