Philadelphia Chosen As One of Three Cities to Gain WNBA Team

The WNBA has announced three new cities will gain a team over the next several years, with Philadelphia getting one in 2030.

The WNBA is continuing to grow, and with that growth means that a WNBA team is finally coming to Philadelphia, writes David Chang for NBC10 Philadelphia.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced the league will be adding three new expansion teams, with Philadelphia’s new professional women’s basketball team debuting in 2030.

Josh Harris, managing partner of the Philadelphia 76ers, hyped up the city for being among the world’s most storied basketball cities and the region for being home to some of the greatest women’s players and coaches ever.

“It’s only right that this city finally gets the WNBA franchise it deserves, and we’re humbled to help usher in a new era of Philadelphia basketball,” he added.

Fans are known for their passion, grit, spirit, and love for sports, and those same qualities are what are expected as the city gains its first new major pro sports team since 2008.

Engelbert, whose ties to Philly include growing up here and her father playing for both Lincoln High School and St. Joseph’s University, also praised fans for their “unmatched passion, rich basketball tradition, and an unwavering love for its teams.”

When the Philadelphia team joins, the WNBA will have 18 teams.
