Montco Steps Up as National Model for Ethical Artificial Intelligence Use

Montco forms Artificial Intelligence Advisory Council to lead ethical use of AI across public service, aiming to serve as a national model.

Montgomery County hopes to be a leader in how local government approaches artificial intelligence, writes Justin Heinze for the Patch.

The Montgomery County Board of Commissioners formed an AI for Public Good Advisory Council earlier this year. The council was designed to help the county responsibly integrate AI into everything from public safety to human services.

Over 100 applicants filed to join the council, representing the private sector, academia, nonprofits, and government. Their mission is to ensure that AI is implemented ethically and transparently in the County.

“When it comes to AI, climate, and sustainability, public officials can’t afford to sit on the sidelines and watch what happens,” said County Commissioner Neil Makhija.

Makhija was invited by Republican Senator Dave McCormick to the Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit in Pittsburgh this week. The event provided a rare bipartisan platform to exchange ideas around innovation and public services.

With AI capabilities evolving at a rapid pace, Montco’s proactive approach hopes to bridge the gap between innovation and public trust. Officials say the council will guide internal departments on how to implement AI tools in governance.
