BRWN GRL Wellness Studio is now open in Bala Cynwyd, offering a fresh take on self-care, writes Shaunice Ajiwe for Philadelphia Magazine.
The spa was founded by Nakea Murray, who also owns VTOX Intimate Health & Wellness. Murray opened it as a way to support her colleague Kellie Greene of Main Line Mobile Massage.
What started as a simple idea evolved into something more meaningful. The studio is a space designed to make wellness welcoming and essential, especially for women of color who haven’t always felt seen in traditional spa settings. Murray says it wasn’t part of the upbringing.
Catering toward black women is important to Murray and is also a strong focus at VTOX.
”Self care was pretty much nonexistent,” she said.
The studio’s services range from massages and facials to Japanese head treatments complete with aromatherapy masked and soft blankets. Their signature offering: a 45-minute guided venting session with in-house therapist Tyra Gardner.
The space features earthy tones, soft wood accents, and art that celebrates all shades of brown.
