In a job market evolving at breakneck speed, today’s professionals face new challenges — and new opportunities. At Penn State Great Valley, Elisa Seeherman, Associate Director of Career Services, plays a pivotal role in helping graduate students navigate this dynamic landscape with clarity and confidence.
Reflecting on the sweeping changes sparked by the pandemic, Seeherman emphasized one particularly positive shift: the normalization of remote work. “There’s more validity for remote work in many fields that previously didn’t even think it was an option,” she said. This flexibility has given job seekers access to a broader geographic job market and the possibility of improved work-life balance.
“Candidates are no longer having to limit themselves to local employers or be willing and able to relocate,” she explained. However, this broadened reach also means more competition, with every opening now getting larger numbers of applicants.
So, in such a saturated job market, how can a job applicant stand out? Seeherman shares her top advice of being digitally savvy and adaptable to new technology.
Digital Fluency: Essential, Not Optional
In today’s market, digital skills aren’t just a bonus — they’re baseline. Seeherman points out the critical importance of being “digitally savvy,” especially as AI tools transform job searches. She highlighted platforms that help candidates generate and enhance resumes and cover letters, research industries, and even prepare for interviews using services like Penn State’s Interview Prep platform.
But she adds a caveat: “They still need to proofread and edit [AI-generated materials] so that it is in their own voice. … Even when processes are automated, at the end of the day, people hire people.”
In addition to being digitally savvy and embracing the technology available to them, Seeherman also advises students to pursue a two-pronged job search: applying for active postings while also researching and building a personal list of ideal employers. “Those companies that excite you and whose values or products align with who you are — that’s your wish list,” she stated.
She also emphasizes that successful networking is built on genuine, mutual connections: “It’s not just about the student getting advice. They may be in a position to help the other person as well.” And building these relationships often starts with shared experiences and real-world collaboration — something Penn State Great Valley prioritizes through its hands-on learning opportunities.
Career Development Through Real-World Experience
Penn State Great Valley distinguishes itself through a strong emphasis on practical, real-world learning, particularly through co-curricular opportunities that align with today’s industry demands. Seeherman encourages students to take full advantage of the school’s applied learning environment, where specialized labs and initiatives not only enhance skill development but also foster meaningful connections with industry partners.
Among these hands-on resources are:
- Insights Lab: Dedicated to data analytics and artificial intelligence, this lab offers students valuable experience in harnessing data to inform business and engineering decisions. It serves as a vital space for those looking to explore how big data drives real-world impact.
- Finance Innovation Research and Education (FIRE) Lab: This interdisciplinary lab brings together finance, engineering, and management to examine the evolving fintech landscape. Students engage in projects that bridge financial modeling and emerging technologies.
- DoIT Lab (Data, Optimization, Innovation, and Technology): A platform for collaborative, cross-disciplinary research, the DoIT Lab immerses students in areas such as predictive analytics, operational optimization, and strategic innovation.
- Great Valley LaunchBox: Designed for aspiring entrepreneurs, this innovation hub provides mentorship, resources, and industry collaboration to help students transform ideas into market-ready ventures.
These resources not only equip students with relevant, cutting-edge skills but also expose them to the collaborative, entrepreneurial mindset essential for thriving in today’s competitive job market.
“Our programs are very oriented to practical applications,” Seerheman stated. “They’re designed for students to go right from the classroom into the workplace.”
Ongoing Growth: The Key to Career Longevity
Whether students are full-time professionals enhancing their credentials or international students preparing to enter the U.S. workforce, continuous learning remains a core value.
“Watch videos, read articles, follow professionals on LinkedIn; just keep continuing to grow and evolve in your field,” Elisa advised.
In a job market where both opportunity and competition have reached unprecedented levels, Seeherman’s guidance is clear: Blend traditional tactics with modern tools, remain intentional, and never stop learning.
Through her guidance and the unique opportunities available at Penn State Great Valley, students are equipped to not only meet today’s demands but to thrive in tomorrow’s workforce.
