Montgomery County native and music legend John Oates is showing no signs of slowing down, writes Jack Irvin for People.
The 77-year-old Hall & Oates co-founder is back with new music, this time teaming up with pop sibling duo Lawrence. Their song, Enough is Enough, will debut on Friday, June 20.
Speaking at the 2025 Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony in New York, Oates reflected on his decades-long songwriting journey. When asked which song best defines his legacy, he pointed to the 1973 hit She’s Gone, calling it “a song that has stood the test of time.”
The soulful classic, originally featured on the “Abandoned Luncheonette” album, remains a fan favorite and earned a spot on Rolling Stones’ list of 500 greatest songs of all time.
Oates says his new track was born from admiration. After becoming inspired by the band Lawrence, fronted by siblings Clyde and Gracie, he wrote a song in their style and sent it their way. The band loved it and joined the project. Oates says that Lawrence is “everything that’s good about young pop music.”
Though he’s long been part of a duo himself, Oates said the Lawrence siblings didn’t need his guidance. “They’re very, very professional and they’re so talented,” he said.
