Governor Josh Shapiro is continuing his push to connect more Pennsylvanians with fresh, affordable food—this time with a $3.4 million boost across 23 counties.
Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding announced the latest round of Fresh Food Financing Initiative (FFFI) grants, aimed at strengthening the local food system and expanding access to nutritious, locally sourced options in underserved communities.
Among the recipients is The Best Route, a Montgomery County-based business awarded $79,050 to expand its Mobile Produce Market. With funding, they’ll launch a mobile kitchen trailer equipped to serve fresh, ready-made meals, support local farms, and accept EBT payments—ensuring equity and access in Southeastern PA.
The initiative, revived by Abington’s Josh Shapiro and funded through gaming revenue grants, prioritizes food deserts and small, women, minority, and veteran-owned businesses. It also follows recent challenges like the USDA’s cancellation of $13 million in local food funding, which left gaps in supply chains and food bank budgets.
Redding made the announcement after a roundtable at Weavers Way Co-op in Philadelphia, which also received a grant to expand cold storage and roll out a mobile market. Other nearby grantees include Kensington’s KFish Comestible and The Community Grocer, both focused on dignified, community-based food access.
