The residents of Freedom Village at Brandywine pulled together to support veterans facing food insecurity. What began as a modest goal of collecting 300 non-perishable food items turned into an overwhelming show of support, culminating in a total of 1,548 donated items.
Organized by Freedom Village’s own Veterans Group, the initiative took place on May 8, when residents across the community were encouraged to leave food donations outside their doors for collection. Later that day, a dedicated team of resident volunteers went door to door to pick up every donated item.
The donations were delivered to Lincoln’s Promise Food Pantry at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). Established in 2022, Lincoln’s Promise is a joint effort between the Coatesville VAMC and the Chester County Food Bank to assist veterans who are finding it difficult to maintain adequate food supply for themselves or their families.
“This effort, which was a resounding success, truly showcases the strong sense of camaraderie and compassion that defines our community,” said Freedom Village at Brandywine Executive Director Danielle Geyer. “With more than 80 veterans residing at Freedom Village at Brandywine, supporting fellow service members is deeply personal for many of our residents. It’s a way for them to continue their service — by giving back to those who served.”
