Fairmount delivers a rare mix of overlooked museums, standout parks, and stellar spots to eat and drink, all of which are tied together by a laid-back neighborhood vibe, writes Pamela Vachon for the Islands.
Before exploring the under-the-radar gems, stop by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the iconic steps famously climbed by Rocky Balboa in his legendary training montage.
Afterward, head to the Rodin Museum to view more than 165 works, including the world-renowned The Thinker. The Barnes Foundation offers an impressive collection of paintings by European masters, along with more localized treasures such as Pennsylvania German furniture.
Another must-visit spot in Fairmount is The Franklin Institute, a science museum that appeals to visitors of all ages.
After exploring Fairmount’s top cultural spots, unwind in one of the neighborhood’s many green spaces, such as the centrally located Corinthian Gardens. This small park is considered an “edible forest garden,” with fruit trees, berries, and nuts available for visitors to enjoy. Philadelphia’s largest green space, Fairmount Park, is also located here, offering 2,000 acres of waterfront paths, rolling hills, and the iconic Victorian-era Boathouse Row.
When hunger strikes, grab a table at A Mano, Zorba’s, or Jack’s Firehouse — all of which are loved local favorites.
