After years of development, Fort Washington-based ActiveProtective has earned FDA marketing authorization for its Tango Belt, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The Tango Belt uses smart sensors to detect dangerous motion and deploys airbags during hip-impacting falls, offering older adults a new layer of protection. In clinical studies, the belt reduced fall-related hip fractures by an impressive 91% when paired with standard care.
CEO Wamis Singhatat called the FDA’s green light “a crucial step” in tackling fall-induced hip fractures, a major cause of injury among seniors. The device was fast-tracked through the FDA’s Breakthrough Device program last year.
Founded in Conshohocken and now headquartered in Fort Washington, ActiveProtective has 12 employees and expects to more than quadruple its team by 2026 as it ramps up operations. Pennsylvania’s large senior population makes it a key market for the company’s expansion.
Designed for comfortable, everyday use, the Tango Belt can be worn day and night and links to a mobile app that alerts caregivers if a fall occurs.
ActiveProtective has raised $14.5 million to date, with backing from groups like the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Primary Care Innovation Fund, which praised the device’s potential to save lives.
